Batteries Recommended for Weather Stations

Batteries-Recommended-for-lacrosse-tesa-Weather-Stations-255

We will explain to you what you need to know about batteries to use in your weather station as statistically over 85% of the problems you have will relate to low voltage batteries.

Not all batteries are created equal...
  • We recommended using FRESH NEW, HIGH QUALITY, BRANDED alkaline batteries to make the best performance for your La Crosse Technology and TESA Weather Pro weather stations.
  • Do not use other less known brands of batteries manufactured in India, China or South-East countries excluding Japan.
  • As their chemical composition may not be up to the required standard that should be strictly adhered to by the brands we recommend.
What you need to know about batteries?
  • Good fresh batteries are necessary for the best performance in your sensors and as a backup in your weather station (When a 230 Volt power adaptor is also supplied).
  • Batteries with a yearly expiration date of 2030, were manufactured in 2020.
  • We recommend batteries with a yearly expiration date more than 6 years in advance of the current year for best performance.
  • A minimum voltage of 1.48V per battery is required for good performance.
  • Lithium batteries as well as Alkaline rated at 1.5 Volts may be used in outdoor sensors. Only use Alkaline batteries for the indoor base stations.
  • Many weather stations with a problem (that is, incorrect reading, not transmit etc) work when tested with fresh batteries.
  • Batteries manufactured this year will have an expiration date for 10 years or more in the future.
Use 1.5 Volt alkaline or lithium batteries in the remote sensor.
  • A good Alkaline battery should work for at least 18 months.
  • A minimum voltage of 1.48V for each battery is necessary for correct performance.
  • Use batteries dated at least six years in advance of the current year.
  • Good branded batteries make less noise, which reduces the chance of RF (radio frequency) interference from the battery compartment.
  • DO NOT USE heavy-duty, rechargeable or private label brand batteries. These batteries are not recommended due to fluctuations in the way they disperse power.
  • DO NOT MIX old and new batteries or different types of batteries (brands, alkaline/lithium, etc.).
  • Carbon-zinc, alkaline, lithium, silver-oxide and the other battery chemistry types when mixed don't get along.
  • Using batteries of different chemistries to power a product can cause damage to your device from electrolyte leakage and over-discharge of the lower capacity batteries.
Battery Safety
  • Remove batteries from products which are not to be used for an extended period of time.
  • Promptly remove dead batteries from the device to avoid corrosion and chemical leakage.
  • Dispose of used batteries properly.
  • DO NOT dispose of batteries in fire, as batteries may explode or leak.
  • DO NOT recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
  • DO NOT short-circuit the supply terminals.

Also after removing old batteries check the battery connections in the outdoor sensors especially as they could need cleaning to make a good battery connection. Clean same with a light grade sandpaper or scratch same with an ordinary household serrated eating knife to clear any rust chemical leakage etc.

Please leave the batteries out of the base unit and the outdoor accessories for at least 20 minutes before re-installing new well-known brands of Alkaline batteries such as VARTA,  Energiser(MAX)  and/or  Duracell with an expiry date no less than year 2028.  From 30 years of data, we fully recommend the Varta Alkaline brand made in Germany.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not manufacture batteries and cannot guarantee their period of good usage – and can only recommend as explained above.
